Pulpectomy in Florence, AL

A pulpectomy is a dental procedure that removes all of the infected or damaged pulp from the inner chamber of a tooth. This treatment is typically performed when the pulp is irreversibly damaged due to severe decay, trauma, or infection. By fully cleaning out the pulp, the dentist can eliminate pain and prevent the spread of infection to surrounding tissues. After the pulp is removed, the tooth is cleaned, disinfected, and filled to restore its structure and function. At Smith & Smith Endodontics in Florence, AL, Drs. Wilder and Dr. Carol Smith specialize in performing pulpectomies to help patients preserve their natural teeth and restore their oral health.

A pulpectomy is performed by first numbing the area around the affected tooth to ensure patient comfort. We will then create a small opening in the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. Using specialized tools, the infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed, and the canals are cleaned and disinfected to eliminate any remaining bacteria. Once the area is thoroughly cleaned, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material to seal the tooth and prevent future infection. Finally, the tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling, and in some cases, a crown may be recommended to restore its full function and appearance.

A pulpectomy provides several benefits by preserving a damaged tooth and restoring oral health. Benefits include:

  • Eliminates pain caused by infected or damaged pulp
  • Prevents the spread of infection to surrounding teeth and tissues
  • Preserves the natural tooth, avoiding the need for extraction
  • Restores the tooth’s structure and functionality
  • Provides a long-term solution for severe decay or pulp damage

I had been in pain for 3 weeks with some new crowns. Turns out I needed a root canal. Dr. Wilder Smith was outstanding! I came home and didn’t even need anything pain relief wise, which was huge for me! He’s humorous - while working on you and very gentle. All ladies in office were wonderful as well. A+ Dr. Smith! Highly recommend!

Went in to have two root canals done and they were all very nice and even worked through their lunch to fit me in.

I came to see Dr. Wilder Smith after a negative experience with another dentist. I could not be more pleased!!! I was very nervous to have a root canal, since I've never had one before and had just come from a negative experience getting a crown with another dentist. Dr. Smith acknowledged my anxiety and was so kind and funny, cracking jokes throughout the whole procedure to keep me at ease. All of the other staff members were super calming and pleasant as well. I came in with pain and extreme sensitivity to even room temperature water. I left feeling amazing. They advised me to take an ibuprofen before the numbing wore off, but to tell the truth, I did not take an ibuprofen, and have not taken one since having the procedure. I left with no pain or sensitivity at all, just couldn't chew for a couple days but that's to be expected! I seriously cannot thank them enough. I was miserable for a month before seeing them and I finally feel like I'm back to my normal life.
